The Mayowood Stone Barn is not just any old venue. And it is most definitely not "just a barn." You need only take one step inside to feel the magic.
The history is in every stone, the craftsmanship is evident. The beauty is in the arches and windows, boasting the character achieved only by thoughtful design, hard work and the passing of years.
The Mayowood Stone Barn is a magical place. It evokes a strong sense of history and a respect for nature. It creates a comfortable haven for anyone who enters and adds a certain mystique to every event.
The Loft can be reached by the new staircase in the Mayowood Stone Barn. The upper level feels like a beautiful rustic chapel with its vaulted ceilings and natural light. Original plank wood floors and stone knee-walls lend the large space a cozy feel.
An indoor ceremony here is stunning, but folks may also consider a dance in the loft. After all, it was the site of many barn dances hosted by the Mayo family back in the day.
The Blacksmith Shop is an intimate lounge area to host a small gathering or a place for your guests to enjoy a cocktail hour before moving to the barn.
Serve a signature drink at the bar and mingle to the sounds of the baby grand player piano.
A branch of the old oak tree reaches gracefully to form a perfect arch under which many brides and grooms have said "I do."
The Bridle Room is another piece of history tucked away on the property. Formerly, this was the place where saddles and horse equipment was stored decades ago. The area now has a secret, rustic hideaway feel.
The bride and her ladies in waiting can take advantage of opportunities for beautiful photos while getting ready for her wedding day.
Complete with a kitchenette and bathroom, the bridal party and their family can use the Bridle Room as a leisure spot for the day between preparations and pictures. The Bridle Room can also be used as a comfortable hideout for the bride when guests are arriving before a wedding ceremony.
The Mayowood Stone Barn was built by Dr. Charles H. Mayo (a.k.a. Dr. Charlie) in the early 1900's. The historic grounds are a parcel of the 3,000 acres of the original Mayowood Farm.
The Mayowood Stone Barn and stables housed ponies and thoroughbred horses which Dr. Charlie and his children rode throughout the farm. Aerial views to this day show the oval imprint of the many laps made around the track behind the barn.
In 1912, as interim Health Inspector for Rochester, Dr. Charlie discovered that the outbreak of scarlet fever was linked to unsafe milk. He started a dairy farm on this site and began to pasteurize milk to encourage safe practices for dairy farmers. The stone house south of the Stone Barn is known as the "Milk House" for good reason.
The grounds at the Mayowood Stone Barn were also a menagerie of types. Dr. Charlie balanced his compassion for his patients with his great interest and attention to animals. Aside from horses and cows, this place was home to rare Japanese deer, buffalo, elk and birds.
The Mayowood Stone Barn and the surrounding property was purchased from the Mayo family by CPDC Rochester Development, Inc., owned by Homer & Shelly Tompkins. Therefore, it is now a privately owned residence and rental facility.
